“HeartBeat – the Musical” is an authentic Romanian musical that presents a universally relevant love story and is built around a tragicomic script written by director and composer Eduard Petru Jighirgiu. The story of the show revolves around two young lovers coming from different backgrounds. From this love story between the two protagonists arise situations that are genuinely comic but also deeply emotional. Situations that will make the audience look deeply into their own being and perhaps, why not, even change their perception of life and their own values.
“HeartBeat – the Musical” is a 100% sung musical, with no spoken text. The music is carefully composed, enhancing every scene of the story, and is intended for all musical‑theatre audiences between the ages of 14 and 100.
The theme of the show is complex, placing emphasis on love in all its forms and drawing on recognizable life situations — dramatic yet full of humor — touching on the sensitive points of society. The inherent conflicts that arise from the story of the two protagonists are full of lessons both for young people and for adults who may carry prejudices or deeply rooted clichés within their own conscience.
These very prejudices and conflicts lie at the heart of our story, where a young Romanian man from a good background, Eric, falls irreversibly in love with a teenage girl from a socially “inferior” class, Eli.
The story takes place in the present day and begins when the girl’s family moves into a residential neighborhood in an effort to improve their social standing. The family’s adaptation to their new environment and standard of living is not immediate — on the contrary, the change happens gradually, as is natural.
The old customs and habits of the girl’s parents cannot be replaced overnight, and for this reason their presence in the neighborhood becomes quite uncomfortable. The conflict that arises from this situation triggers an avalanche of unexpected events.
What ultimately makes everyone let go of their prejudices and appearances is a completely unforeseen surprise for both families. Because the heart is the essential instrument in managing emotions, the ending of the show is… but we’d rather let you discover for yourselves how our story concludes.
