The Gypsy Baron is an Operetta in three acts by Johann Strauss – son, after a libretto by Ignaz Schnitzer. The premiere took place at the Theatre an der Wien in Vienna on 24 October 1885. In Romania, the Operetta was first represented at the National Theatre in Bucharest on 9 January 1890.
The action takes place in the first half of the eighteenth century on the once flourishing fields of Barinkay exile. The castle is now a ruin; neighbour Zsupan, a former pig-breeder, is thriving on the exploitation of Barinkay’s property. The royal (imperial) amnesty brings young Sandor Barinkay (son of the exiled) to the front to return home for repossession. Conscious of having to pay for the robbery, Zsupan proposes to Barinkay to marry his daughter. But the young man is fascinated by the beauty of the Saffi gypsy, which he encounters at night in the abandoned castle.
Returning from the fair, the Gypsies acclaim the master’s son as their Voivode. The action continues and complicates with intrigue, love, war and victory. The happy ending, finds Sandor near Saffi and his “subjects” who chose the Voivode.
