The Operetta Theatre offers this weekend — on 25, 27 and 28 September — a series of three performances of the musical Rebecca, by Michael Kunze (libretto) and Sylvester Levay (music). It is the last chance to see the production this year. Rebecca has all the ingredients of a classic Hollywood film noir, while the music and staging give audiences an intensely personal experience. Details and tickets at opereta.ro.
The musical Rebecca, first performed at the Raimund Theatre in Vienna (2006), is inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 novel and Alfred Hitchcock’s Oscar‑winning 1940 film adaptation. The version at the Ion Dacian National Operetta and Musical Theatre, imported directly from the producer VBW International Vienna, has already been performed in 11 languages, in 14 countries, for more than 2.7 million spectators, and is similar to the one currently staged in London’s West End. The production uses a simple set design that manages to create an extraordinary atmosphere almost entirely through light and shadow.
The story of Rebecca follows the fascinating transformation of the anonymous narrator, Ich (I), played by Daniela Bucșan/Cristina Popa, from a naïve, timid and insecure young woman into a strong and confident one. After meeting the charming Lord Maxim de Winter (Florin Budnaru/Victor Bucur) at a hotel on the French Riviera, the young woman arrives at the enigmatic and unwelcoming Manderley estate, where she faces the housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers (Adina Sima/Georgiana Mototolea), who watches her every move, and the lingering presence of the first Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca, who disappeared in a mysterious accident.
“Ich is a role I love. I think the fast pace suits me very well — it keeps the audience constantly connected to the action,” said Daniela Bucșan, eager to perform in two of the last three Rebecca shows of the year.
“I can’t wait to play this role again — I love it just as much as Juliet; it completes me artistically,” said Cristina Popa, who will perform the role of Ich in the 27 September show.
“Rebecca is a true living film — a romantic, captivating and suspense‑filled production that many of our loyal spectators have told me they’ve seen multiple times,” declared Radu Petrovici, manager of the Operetta Theatre.
After this week’s Rebecca series, the season continues on the first weekend of October with the three‑act operetta The Circus Princess by Emmerich Kálmán. For more details about the program and tickets, visit opereta.ro and follow us on social media.
