The “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre invites you on Saturday, November 8, and Sunday, November 9, at 6:00 PM, to the performances of the musical Kiss Me, Kate!

The story of this production begins in 1947, when Cole Porter, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, invited Bella and Samuel Spewack to join him in the creative endeavor of adapting the comedy into a musical.

The Broadway premiere took place on December 30, 1948, at the New Century Theater, and at the following year’s Tony Awards, the production was honored with five awards, including Best Musical.

The show, which premiered in Romania in December 2019, returns to the stage of the Operetta Theatre more vibrant than ever, bringing with it a burst of color, comedy, subtle irony, dance, and music.

Kiss Me, Kate! is the result of the brilliant and irreverent humor of four remarkable writers — Bella and Sam Spewack, Cole Porter, and William Shakespeare. A play‑within‑a‑play, it takes the audience behind the scenes of a theatrical production, revealing both the anxieties experienced by stage partners and the thrill of the final result. It creates the ideal setting for a delicious cocktail of jazz, swing, and Renaissance pastiche. Medieval maidens become pin‑up girls, gentlemen turn into urban dandies, all flashing dazzling smiles as they dance across the stage.

The performances on November 8 and 9 mark Victor Ion’s debut in the role of Paul. Already known to audiences as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Victor is a talented and versatile soloist who joins the cast alongside the established artists of the Operetta Theatre.
