Extraordinary Gala

On April 4, 2026, the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre invites you to a cultural event of rare magnitude: an Extraordinary Gala bringing the legendary soprano Sumi Jo to the Romanian stage, alongside tenor George Vîrban, soloist of the Theatre and laureate of the first edition of the “Sumi Jo” International Singing Competition in France (2024).

Described by Herbert von Karajan as a voice “from above,” Sumi Jo is one of the most acclaimed coloratura sopranos in history. With a career spanning over 40 years on stages such as the Metropolitan Opera and Teatro alla Scala, the artist is a Grammy Award winner and an Oscar nominee, standing as an emblematic figure of global musical excellence.

Joining Sumi Jo on stage will be George Vîrban, a golden voice of the new generation and a remarkable soloist of the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre. The young tenor brings a refined technique and a distinctive charisma, confirmed by his artistic journey on international stages such as the Bayerische Staatsoper, Palais Garnier, Aalto Musiktheater, Metropolitan Opera New York, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and Lotte Concert Hall Seoul.
