On Saturday, September 8, 2018, starting at 7:30 PM, the cultural event “DACIKA – Tribute to the Heroes” took place in the Roman Castrum Amphitheatre at Porolissum. The concert held in Zalău marked the first performance of the national tour “DACIKA – Tribute to the Heroes”, a project funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity, dedicated to the Centenary of the Great Union.
The uniqueness of this project lies in its original musical concept, through which composer Mihai Toma gracefully blends folklore with classical orchestration and electronic music.
The arrangements are crafted in a musical language defined by dignity and respect for traditional values, avoiding any entertainment‑oriented approach. The musical style is that of monumental symphonic electronic music (in the vein of Vangelis or Jean‑Michel Jarre), built upon Romanian musical themes of both folkloric and cultivated origin. The orchestrations combine folk rhythms with synthetic sounds and ethnic instruments.
The event takes the form of a multimedia vocal‑symphonic concert, featuring a soloist ensemble of five musicians performing both individually and together with an orchestra of twelve instrumentalists and a choir of nine vocal soloists from the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre.
The artistic impact of this production has consistently been remarkable, with audiences captivated by the spectacular sound design and visual presentation, as well as by the impressive power that electronic textures bring to well‑known folk themes, presented as authentically as possible through the use of whistle, tárogató, pan flute, piano, and violin.
The show’s repertoire includes 20 pieces, with a total duration of 110 minutes, consisting largely of arrangements of various categories of Romanian music:
- Solemn folk music: Așa‑i românul, Cântec despre Bucovina
- Famous Romanian folk themes: Barbu lăutaru, Tudorițo nene, Mocirița, Unde e Târgoviștea, Lie Ciocârlie, etc.
- Romanian cultivated music: Ballad by Ciprian Porumbescu, Ballad for Violin by George Enescu, Enescu’s Romanian Rhapsodies
- Original melodies inspired by folklore
