Between November 8–11, 2018, the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre organizes the second edition of the “Ion Dacian” Festival, an event conceived as a tribute to the renowned Romanian tenor, principal soloist, stage director, and former director of the Bucharest Operetta Theatre.
The festival will open on November 8, at 7:00 PM, at the “Ion Dacian” National Operetta and Musical Theatre.
Born on October 11, 1911, Ion Dacian (real name Ion Pulca) began his musical career in 1934 at the Romanian Opera in Cluj, where he performed 18 roles. In 1939, he was hired by the “Alhambra” Operetta and Revue Theatre in Bucharest, whose director, Nicolae Vlădoianu, also changed his stage name from Pulca to Dacian. Between 1942 and 1947, he served as co‑director of the Alhambra Theatre, performing leading tenor roles in all productions.
In 1950, the State Operetta Theatre was founded, and Ion Dacian became its principal soloist. He later served as the theatre’s director for a decade, from 1961 to 1971. He passed away on December 8, 1981.
The “Ion Dacian” Festival is, above all, a moment of joy, celebrating the emblematic figure who transformed operetta into a cultural hallmark of Romania — a legacy that must be preserved and carried forward at the highest standards of tradition and artistic excellence.
“The festival aims to bring to the forefront the enduring need for good music, brilliant voices, and moments of normality.” — Bianca Ionescu‑Ballo, Interim General Manager.
