I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change – 9 October (next performance on 23 November)

Joe DiPietro, the author of the book on which the musical is based and of the libretto, describes the essence of this comedy about relationships in vivid terms:

“OK, here’s an idea: you get married, swear eternal love, bring into the world a few little humans who depend entirely on you for eighteen years, get a job, stay home every weekend, and never see another naked woman for the rest of your life.”

I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is one of the most successful miniature (off‑Broadway) musicals, with 5,003 performances at the Westside Theatre in New York over 12 years, and an impressive international trajectory with productions in 32 countries and over 15,000 performances worldwide.

The production, directed by actor Victor Bucur, features well‑known names of the Romanian theatre scene such as Tania Popa (9 Oct.) and Maria Buză (23 Nov.).

Next to Normal – 11 October (next performance on 22 November)

The rock musical Next to Normal tells the story of the Goodman family, torn apart by the trauma of a tragic loss that triggers the mother Diana’s bipolar disorder. A difficult and timely subject, approached without compromise. The ending brings a note of hope, a promise that where there is love, all of life’s trials can be overcome.

The second production of this week is also the most awarded: three Tony Awards in 2009 (for Best Original Score and for Orchestration) and one of the only ten musicals ever to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in the more than 100‑year history of the prestigious award. In 2024, it was nominated in four categories at the most important distinction of the British stage, the Laurence Olivier Awards. The Broadway production gathered 734 performances in just three years after its premiere, followed by more than 5,000 others worldwide.

The Beautiful Indifferent / The Human Voice – 12 October

A unique experience on the stages of Bucharest — The Beautiful Indifferent / The Human Voice — a theatre play and an opera brought together in a shared dramaturgy that offers soprano Oana Șerban the opportunity for a true tour de force. It is the story of a relationship in two stages: indifference and separation. Can they still hope for a happy ending? Or will she project a happy ending based on the intense emotions of their relationship and her deep feelings for her partner?

Jean Cocteau wrote The Beautiful Indifferent for Édith Piaf — ideal for portraying the woman torn apart by jealousy, delivering a monologue forced by the lover’s complete lack of reaction throughout the play. The dramatic tension reaches its peak through the power of Francis Poulenc’s music in The Human Voice, all the more so as physical distance now separates the two partners, who communicate only by telephone.

The concept of the diptych, created by Radu Petrovici, is staged by Oana Rusu.
