The National Operetta and Musical Theatre “Ion Dacian” invites you on a fascinating journey into the musical world of Johann Strauss II and Emmerich Kálmán

The February program includes seven performances of some of the most beloved operettas in the world — The Gypsy Baron, Viennese Blood, and Die Fledermaus — set to the vibrant music of Johann Strauss II, alongside The Circus Princess, on traditional Hungarian rhythms in Emmerich Kálmán’s distinctive style.

Last year, the Operetta Theatre celebrated the bicentenary of Johann Strauss’s birth by offering audiences the Re:Strauss Festival. It was the perfect occasion for an original premiere: Viennese Blood, a production created with minimal resources and a wealth of directorial ideas signed by Rareș Zaharia.

The enduring success of The Gypsy Baron is owed to the beauty of Strauss’s music. More than 140 years after its world premiere, the production humorously defies social taboos.

Die Fledermaus is an unparalleled social satire in which situational comedy trivializes all the dramas of bourgeois life. Yet the sarcasm of the libretto is elevated by the most elegant music Strauss ever composed.

The love story in The Circus Princess is the starting point of an adventure as incredible as it is amusing, filled with stolen identities, contrasting characters, and entirely different worlds. It is the perfect musical cocktail crafted by Emmerich Kálmán.
